Carol Wu Bio
Ever since I was a child, I had always wanted to become a math teacher. I always
enjoyed math and knowing the exact steps to solve a problem. When I was studying for my
undergraduate degree, I learned more deeply about the drastic differences in education systems
throughout the United States and knew that I wanted to serve an urban population when I
became a teacher. As an individual who loved mathematics and enjoyed the process of learning
and solving problems, I wanted the same for students who may not have been given the same
opportunities to find a passion and interest in mathematics like I did. When I learned
mathematics, it was taught in the very traditional way of memorization and drilling practice
problems until one mastered a skill. Today, my students thrive from discovering mathematical
concepts on their own and learning how the mathematics we discuss in class can be applied to
their daily lives. This is why I hope to gain more knowledge as to how I can connect math with
real world problems every opportunity I can get.
